Slide the carrier (containing the photograph) backwards and forwards until the correct focus is obtained, when figures and objects will be seen solid, in relief. | 注記 | 裏書 : The vast operations against General Cronje at Paardeberg, had resulted in his surrender on February 27th, the anniversary of the famous Boer victory at Majuba Hill. The utter reversal of their fortune seemed to wither the Boer spirit and there were no great engagements after that. Bloemfontein was reached with little opposition and entered with none March '3th, 1900. Lord Roberts wrote that there never was a more temperate army than that which marched at his command to Bloemfontein. Roberts had nurtured the Army Temperance Society and had transfigured the army in India. Kitchener had pourea whiskey on the sands of Egypt when it had been smuggled within his lines. The army on its way to Bloemfontein had little to drink but disease-laden water and so little to eat that Lord Roberts was said to have reached Bloemfontein with his men half-starved and his horses wholly starved The halt of six weeks was necessary to fight the fever imbibed at Paardberg and to feed up men and horses for the long march to Pretoria. |
