| 注記 | 裏書 : 14523-ln the Trenches at the Shaho. The winter quarters of the Japanese army in front of Port Arthur were protected by trenches from which the soldiers could protect their camp at any time from assaults of the enemy. In advancing to attack the Russian intrenchments, they actually dug eighteen miles of covered trenches across the Shuishiying Valley in the nighttime. In these some of the soldiers were obliged to live, sleeping in holes in the ground which were protected and made bomb-proof by sand-bags. These dug-outs were usually roofed with dried millet stalks called kowliang, over which was spread a thick layer of clay. Through weary weeks of severe winter weather, the lines of the two armies faced each other in these bombproof retreats on the tanks of the Shaho river before the famous battles which gave the Japanese possession of the coveted Port Arthur-about 220,000 Russians and 240,000 Japanese, "a womanless, childless city, which produced nothing and consumed every day one thousand tons of food."
