Slide the carrier (containing the photograph) backwards and forwards until the correct focus is obtained, when figures and objects will be seen solid, in relief. | 注記 | 裏書 : To effect the relief of Ladysmith cost General Buller one-fourth of his gallant army of 20,000 men. The Dublin Fusiliers suffered most severely; they had only five officers and two-fifths of their men left standing. At Colenso 1,200 had fallen, at Spion Kop 1,700, at Vaalkranz 400; and in each instance the British had been defeated, only to retreat across the Tugela, "that accursed river," as one Englishman writes. In the final successful advance 1,600 more men fell. From February 14th to the beginning of March General Buller fought his way to Ladysmith and accomplished the very severe task which he had undertaken so jauntily at the first. He had underrated the powerful fighting qualities of the Boers and he paid dearly for his misreckoning by three successive and distracting defeats. But by his own dogged persistence and his nation's long-suffering indulgence, he accomplished his ends at last-which is creditable to all concerned. The famished, disease-stricken garrison was too enfeebled to strike a blow in co-operation for its own relief. Yet 2,000 of them, with a martial madness, staggered out next day after their relief to pursue the Boers--whom happily they could not find. | |||||||
