Slide the carrier (containing the photograph) backwards and forwards until the correct focus is obtained, when figures and objects will be seen solid, in relief. Hold the Instrument, so that a STRONG light falls on the FACE of the Photograph. | |||||||

| 注記 | 裏書 : May Ist, 1900, the centre column streamed out of Bloemfontein, and by June 5th, Lord Roberts occupied Pretoria 240 miles away. The army had a front of 20 miles, at the outset 40 miles. Cavalry, infantry, artillery, 50,000 men advanced to the overthrow of the second little state of indomitable Boers. Ian Hamilton rode on the right, and French's splendid cavalry seemed everywhere. On the northern bank of the Sand River the Boers held a formidable position which might have been a second Colenso had Roberts been a second Buller. As it was there was much fighting with brains and little with blood. The Boers were wearied with their long sieges and many battles, and they fell back steadily as the British advanced. On May 29th a vigorous battle raged before Johannesburg before Botha relinquished the city. At Pretoria he only offered resistance enough to hold off the British while he could remove his stores. Discretion is sometimes better than valor, and the Transvaal Capital, which was to be defended to the uttermost, quietly submitted to the inevitable and the irresistible. | |||||||
