| 注記 | 裏書 : This picture is remarkable as showing a huge 500 pound shell in flight. A picture of a flying shell is a phenomenon so rare that when it first appeared in illustrations it provoked much discussion as to whether it was a fake or bona fide photograph. During the siege of Port Arthur the Japanese brought from Osaka in Japan sixteen of these monster rifled howitzers and placed them in advantageous positions among the hills several miles outside the city. It was said that the Russian defenders lost hope when the Japanese opened on the city and the bottled up war ships with these irresistible guns. On some days of great artillery activity as many as 1800 of the 500 lb. projectiles were hurled against the defenses and the warships in a single day. The achievement of bringing from so great a distance, by ship and rail, so many great siege guns, has never been equaled in siege operations of the world. When this picture was made, smokeless powder was being used, consequently the magnificent effect of a great cloud which arises from an explosion of black powder is wanting. One effect in this picture will scarcely be noticed by the casual observer:- a light smoke appears to be rising from the ground about the gun; this is not smoke but dust raised by the tremendous concussion of the great gun. This dust sometimes rose so high as to be visible to the Russian gunners in the fort in Port Arthur; for that reason it often became necessary for the Japanese artillery-men to sprinkle the ground about the guns with water each day before opening fire.
